Lancelot
Season 1 Episode 5
So this is my favorite Lancelot episode, but Lancelot is one of my least favorite characters so that's not saying much. Every time I see him, I am definitely like "ehhh err ack, whatever". That probably makes no sense typed out, but true story. The actor who plays him, Santiago, is great. I think he does a wonderful job. It's just the character in general I do not care for.
So with that lovely intro, I am sure you really want to read the rest..... lol
It starts with a griffin chasing after Merlin. Merlin starts running and is saved by the stranger. The stranger's sword however does no damage to the griffin and shatters. But they run together now, so I guess that counts as saving Merlin's life.
They manage to get away, and the stranger introduces himself as Lancelot. Merlin finds out that Lancelot was hurt by the griffin, and takes him back to Gaius for help.
Lancelot tells his story to Merlin when he recovers about how he wants to be a Knight of Camelot, and Merlin convinces him that he can do it. Merlin offers to talk to Arthur. It's kind of funny when Lancelot is surprised Merlin knows Arthur. Ha.
They see Arthur test one of the men wanting to be a knight, who only has to survive on his feet fighting Arthur for a minute. He goes down pretty much immediately. Arthur's pissed that there's no one passing his test. Merlin suggests Lancelot...lying saying that he's a nobleman. Only those with noble blood can serve for the Knights. Arthur agrees to give Lancelot a try out.
Lancelot is bummed when he finds out he has to be a noblemen. He tells Merlin the story of how he lost his family to a band of renegades. How he trained everyday since then, and now it was all for not.
Merlin has to sneak into the ....records room? or some library or something to try and create a seal of nobility for Lancelot. It a rather fun scene with Jeffrey. He takes a book with all the seals, and pretends it's for 'homework'. I guess Merlin gets homework or something. He does some magic and copies one of the seals onto his own piece of paper, except with Lancelot's name and changing it from the fourth son to the fifth. Jeffrey clears his throat, not trusting Merlin apparently, and Merlin claims, it was a 'real page turner'. Aww.
Merlin shows Lancelot the forgery. He didn't want to lie....but peer pressure. Merlin convinces him to do it anyway. Ohhh peer pressure. :)
Guinevere takes Lancelot's measurements for his knight's uniform. They flirt. It's weird. But then again....it's Guinevere and Lancelot. The main reason I hate Lancelot. I do not like their relationship at all. But he's sweet to her. He asks if Merlin is involved with her, and Merlin laughs, saying they are just friends. Which is just amusing because in the last episode they definitely kissed. But I think this really puts the end of her having a crush on Merlin.
When Lancelot meets Arthur, Arthur makes fun of his name..."Lance...alot." Lol. Funny. So he hands him the seal, and Arthur hits him upside the head and claims he has sluggish reactions. But he lets Lancelot clean out the stables. Ha.
Gaius praises Merlin for being mature and letting go of the whole Lancelot being a knight thing go(not knowing what he did). Merlin eats up the compliment that he doesn't deserve, when Lancelot walks in the door covered in dung. Merlin shrugs and said he got him a job working in the stables. Gaius sees straight through his lie though, and then loses his temper with Merlin. They have an argument.
Arthur then attacks Lancelot has he's sharpening a sword. Lancelot loses, but Arthur is still impressed. He decides to give Lancelot a chance, when the griffin attacks somewhere in the lower town and there's a lot of screaming. Merlin and Gaius help victims.
Uther realizes the Griffin is on it's way to Camelot, and that they need to be ready. Meanwhile Gaius tries to look up what a winged creature with a body of a lion is.....
PS THIS PART IS RIDICULOUS. There's a Griffin statue IN the castle. They pass it ALL the time! Why does no one recognize it to be the same beast????? Sorry....had to point that out.
So anyway, Arthur moves up Lancelot's test to become a Knight, because he really needs his help to fight the beast. He has the same sixty seconds to stay alive with Arthur. He nearly loses. He's on his back, but then he trips up Arthur and wins. Arthur looks all kinds of pissed off, but then as he stands he is knighted.
Uther mentions that he thought there was only four sons in that family that he's supposedly apart of, and he tells them to bring the seal to Jeffrey..the court genealogist...to see if it's fake. uh oh.
But that night they party down. It's really amusing. Gwen really shows that she has a crush on him, which I suppose is cute. Whatever.
Merlin and Gaius kind of continue their argument, but allows Merlin and Lancelot to have their night to celebrate.
Arthur asks Lancelot's opinion on Morgana, but he thinks he means Gwen, so they both say she's beautiful. So awkward...in so many ways.
Then Morgana is gazing over at them with her one finger on her lip, trying to look seductive I guess. I think I always figured she was looking at Arthur like that, but maybe it was supposed to be for Lancelot. We know she loves the attention. But our dear Lancelot has thing for Gwen.
Then the best scene in the show comes up.
Merlin turns to Guinevere and says: You know what? I think our Sir Lancelot might have eyes for you, Gwen
Gwen: Don't be silly.
Merlin: So what if he did? Would it be so bad?
Gwen: He's not really my type.
Merlin: Well, there's a surprise. Sometimes I wonder if you''d know what your type was if he was standing right next to you.
She looks at Merlin.
Gwen: You're probably right.
Merlin: So come on-just for the sake of argument, if you had to, Arthur or Lancelot?
Gwen: But I don't have to, and I never will.
Merlin: Oh, you are no fun Gwen.
I LOVE this convo between them. Gwen still does flash her eyes on Merlin for a second, which is funny because Merlin is so completely blind to it. Then he asks her to pick between the two men that she does end up falling in love with, and she refuses to pick, even at this early stage. Too funny.
The next morning Gaius gives them some hangover cure. I WANT that. No matter how nasty, it'd be nice to have some magic cure.
However the guards come in and restrain Lancelot right after. Uh oh I think they know.
Uther is PISSED. He arrests Lancelot for the lie. Arthur still tries to stick up for him, but it's no good. He broke the first code of Camelot.
Merlin visits Lancelot in jail, and apologizes for pressuring him to try out for the Knights. It's sad.
Gaius figures out the creature is a griffin. DUH. Merlin recognizes it....and then the warning bell rings. The creature is in the lower square. Ahh. The knights try and fight the creature, but again their weapons are useless. Lancelot is NOT happy being locked up. He wants to be out helping.
Gaius tells Uther that the creature is a griffin and that it can only be defeated by magic. Uther doesn't believe him and believes Arthur had managed to hurt him, even when Arthur tells him that they didn't. Stupid Uther. I think Arthur would know! Dumbass.
Merlin has another kind of...kiddish moment. Gaius tells Merlin that he has to do something. Merlin gets upset, saying that he can't go up against it that he doesn't have magic that powerful. Gauis says he has to. He flips out and says "Do you even care what happens to me? oh 'Do this, Merlin, Do that Merlin! Go and kill the griffin, Merlin! And I'll just sit here and warm my feet by the fire!". Well I guess he has a point. Gaius does make Merlin risk his life A LOT. But then Gaius says how much he cares about Merlin, and so Merlin feels a little guilty and agrees to try and find a way to kill the Griffin.
Arthur goes into the jail cell and confronts Lancelot, all pissy. He is mostly mad though because Lancelot fights like a knight and he wants him to be a knight. They talk about the Griffin, but he sends Lancelot out by himself to flee Camelot. He tells him to never to return. Lancelot is mad. He wants to ride out with Arthur. Arthur does all of this without Uther knowing, which probably isn't the best idea.
Merlin and Gaius finds a spell that will work. Merlin is nervous because he's never done something so powerful. He practices, and nothing happens. Uh oh.
Lancelot goes and finds Gwen, and asks for weapons and armor saying he has to protect Arthur and Camelot. Gwen begs him not to go, but of course he does. Kind of an asshole thing. It's not his duty. He was told by the Prince and King not to go, his girl begs him not to, but he still does. Whatever.
Arthur rides out with the knights. Gwen finds Merlin and tells him that Lancelot is riding out after Arthur. So Merlin is like CRAP! Time to go. So he chases after Lancelot, and tells him that he's coming to. Lancelot tries to get Merlin to stay, but that doesn't work.
The Griffin attacks all of the knights. They don't make it. Merlin and Lancelot hear the screaming in the distance. They find all the knights on the ground. They find Arthur, who surprise, is still alive. The griffin comes out, and Lancelot gets his lance, and charges. As he starts, Merlin starts saying his spell over and over, with nothing happening. Until finally right before he hits the griffin the lance electrifies. He hits the griffin and it dies. Hells yeah.
Merlin is super excited, which is cute. Lancelot is happy but shocked. Arthur starts to stir, and Merlin runs. Apparently he doesn't want Arthur to know he's there. Arthur thinks Lancelot killed the griffin.
Uther is again PISSED when he finds out Lancelot is the one that killed the beast, and that Arthur let him out of his dungeon to begin with. Arthur once again pleads for Lancelot, saying that he saved his life, and Camelot. Uther offers a pardon, but won't give his knighthood back.
Lancelot waits outside the door as they discuss his fate. Merlin comes up to see what's happening.
This is the interesting part, Merlin states that they have to restore his knighthood because he killed the griffin. Then Lancelot says...no I didn't....you did. He admits to hearing and seeing Merlin cast the spell that killed the beast. Merlin looks very nervous, but Lancelot promises not to tell. So.....someone else knows!!! Woot.
But Lancelot refuses to take real credit for what he did not do. He enters the chamber with the King and Arthur, and he offers to leave on his own free will. Arthur still says he should stay, but Lancelot says he has to prove to himself that he's a worthy Knight of Camelot.
Morgana notices Gwen upset by Lancelot leaving, but seems slightly unconcerned. Aww poor Gwen.
Gaius admits to Merlin that he was actually wrong this time. The two of them needed each other after all. Merlin asks if they'll ever see him again, and that he believes they will.
Oh yes you will dear Merlin. You definitely will. Sorry about that.
